One of my favorite educational shows on TV is called How Its Made. The show is simply about as the title suggests how random stuff comes to be. I recently saw the episode featuring stained glass (video segments attached below) and was blown away by what it takes to create the beautiful pieces of decorative glass art. It makes a lot more sense to me why stained glass can be such a pricey product. I hope you enjoy the video and gain a new appreciation for the development of stained glass. Talk about a skilled trade. The stained glass portion begins at the 5:45 minute mark of the video if you don’t want to see the first segment about how drill bits are created. How Its Made takes everyday items we take for granted and shows how much goes into their creation. Creating drill bits seems as boring as watching paint dry but it is actually very interesting.
I never knew stained glass had a history that stretched back to 1000 AD. Stained glass is made with copper foil or a very old lead technique, which is featured in the video. The stained glass artist in the video is no doubt an expert at this trade. I attached the second portion of the stained glass process below.
