There are two types of workers, according to a friend of mine: stackers and spreaders. I happen to be a spreader when it comes to paperwork. If I put things in piles, I will never find them again. However, if I spread my work out, I know exactly where things are. I had placed a beautiful, shallow dish made of decorative glass on my desk to hold paper clips and odds and ends. It is a beautiful piece, but after about a month of spreading my papers all over the desk, it was covered, and out of sight, out of mind.
